It is the mission of Saddlebred Rescue, Inc. (SBR) to educate the public on concerns facing the Saddleseat breeds and save the unwanted horses from slaughter and return them to useful, productive lives.
Each year, many Saddlebreds will be sold through various means. The well-meaning owner often believes that their horse is headed to a loving new home. Although, this is true in most cases, a frightening number of usable Saddlebreds, Morgans and on occasion, Hackney ponies, end up on trucks slaughter-bound to Canada and Mexico or a similar fate. Any horse is fair game for slaughterhouses: foals, pregnant mares, pleasure and show horses.
Our goal is to make a difference by educating the public, our youth, the horse industry, and the animal protection network who is becoming more involved in the prevention of cruelty to horses, providing alternatives/services to the dealers and auction houses, and the rehabilitation and re-homing of usable rescues. SBR wants to provide a “Safety Net,” so the horses that are saved are never at risk again and also provide an option for owners who want a secure alternative for their horses if needed. Our goal is the rescue, rehab and re-home as many usable horses as possible into new homes. To do this our approach to rescue is not to have permanent homes at the rescue for the horses. Had we done this we would of only been able to help 25 horses and not the 800+ that we have adopted out across the country since early 2006.
We are starting programs to help ensure future generations know about our wonderful breed and all they can do. Programs include "Kids Care", where youth groups are encouraged to support our efforts and learn to take care of their horses as well as "The Pegasus Project", which will enable the rescues to teach those in need how to drive. Through the Pegasus Project we want to reach out to veterans, servicemen/women and their families as well as teens and their families who have been faced with bullying. Saddlebred Rescue also wants to support therapeutic and handicapped riding and driving programs where possible.
In the course of helping the horses we want to pledge to be a good citizen within all areas of the horse industry and to set and live by high standards through our dealings with horse owners, trainers and instructors, breed associations, professional groups, youth groups, and with our supporters and volunteers. Saddlebred Rescue, Inc. does not pass judgment on any person or sect of people. We are here to help the horses.
